We had someone over to fix the couch today, his name was Ahmed, from Jordan. Which if you didn't know, is near Egypt. He was North African, and a pretty cool dude. He said, since the age of eleven, he has been an upholsterer, but they had to close the business, because everyone buys things from IKEA now.
You know, people in skilled trades have fewer and fewer opportunities to succeed. Builders now, they build with wood and not stone, the beautiful buildings of old are not being built anymore. The quality furniture, it's all being replaced with cheaper, almost as good, product. Product that doesn’t stand the test of time, or have the natural beauty.
The problem is that when you put them next to each other, the well built furniture, the IKEA made in china stuff, they don't look all that much different. But when it comes to longevity, a well built piece of furniture can last hundreds of years, a stone home, even longer. But we don't build things that last anymore.
It used to be about building things that last for generations, now we build things to make the most profit. In the long run, as our landfills continue to grow, this model is unsustainable. When we buy things, we should be sure that they are of quality construction. When we buy our homes, we should buy the ones that our great great great grandchildren will be able to live in, not these monstrous structures of wood, but the beautiful stone buildings and quality furniture that can be admired for centuries.
